What Is Muhurat Trading and Why It Matters
Muhurat Trading is a one-hour special trading session that takes place every year on Diwali, the festival of lights. The word “Muhurat” refers to an auspicious time in the Hindu calendar that is believed to bring success and good fortune.
The practice marks the beginning of the new Hindu financial year, known as Samvat, and is deeply rooted in India’s cultural and religious traditions. On this day, traders and investors perform Lakshmi Puja — worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity — before making their first trades of the new year.
The tradition dates back decades, originating from the days of the BSE trading ring, when brokers would open their ledgers for the new year during Diwali. What started as a symbolic gesture has now become a vibrant market event, blending ritual with modern financial participation.
Auspicious Start to Samvat 2082
This year’s Muhurat Trading will mark the start of Samvat 2082, and market experts say the timing could be particularly symbolic given India’s robust economic growth trajectory, resilient markets, and rising retail participation.
Over the past few years, India’s stock markets have seen a surge in retail investors, many of whom see Muhurat trading as an opportunity to make small yet meaningful investments in blue-chip or fundamentally strong stocks.
Typically, the Sensex and Nifty tend to trade positively during the Muhurat hour, as optimism and festive sentiment often drive buying activity.
“Muhurat trading is not about profit or loss; it’s about faith, hope, and new beginnings,” said Anil Shah, a senior market analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. “Even small symbolic trades are considered lucky as they set the tone for the year ahead.”
Investor Sentiment: Festive Cheer Meets Market Optimism
Historically, Muhurat trading sessions have witnessed higher trading volumes and buoyant sentiment, with investors from across the country participating — from retail traders to institutional investors.
In 2024, both Sensex and Nifty closed in the green during Muhurat trading, rising by nearly 0.8%, reflecting festive optimism amid global uncertainties. Analysts expect a similar trend this year, citing steady corporate earnings, strong macroeconomic indicators, and India’s growing position as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.
“The festive season often brings renewed positivity in the markets. Investors typically use Muhurat trading to enter high-quality stocks or add to long-term portfolios,” said Meera Sanyal, an independent financial consultant.
Cultural Significance Beyond the Numbers
Beyond trading gains, Muhurat trading carries emotional and spiritual significance. For many families involved in stockbroking and trading, it is a generational tradition. Offices are decorated, diyas (lamps) are lit, and sweets are distributed as clients and brokers come together to celebrate prosperity.
Many market veterans believe that the act of buying even a single share during this session brings good fortune for the coming year. Some investors also view it as an opportunity to gift stocks to their children or loved ones, symbolizing wealth creation and financial empowerment.
“For us, it’s a celebration of gratitude — for the wealth we’ve earned and the opportunities that lie ahead,” said a Mumbai-based brokerage firm owner. “We light diyas, conduct Lakshmi Puja, and start the new Samvat with positive energy.”
What to Expect This Year
Market experts predict that Samvat 2082 will be another year of strong growth for Indian equities, driven by sustained domestic consumption, expanding manufacturing output, and ongoing digital transformation.
While the Muhurat trading hour itself may see limited movement due to its symbolic nature, the underlying optimism is expected to set the tone for the upcoming earnings season and the new financial year.
As investors prepare for Diwali 2025, Muhurat trading stands as a reminder that the Indian stock market is not just about numbers — it’s a reflection of culture, confidence, and collective aspirations for a prosperous future.
