India vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI Highlights
KL Rahul earlier pushed it out first, then calmly switched gears to finish unbeaten on 112 balls from 92 balls and score 284/7 in 50 overs for India. New Zealand had a vice grip on the Indian innings in the middle overs, but Rahul won it for the most part. He combined 73 runs in 88 balls with Ravindra Jadeja and 57 runs in 49 balls with Nitish Kumar Reddy. He then had Mohammed Siraj at the other end as he smashed 25 runs in the last 13 balls he faced.
After Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had started India well, New Zealand’s team roared back. Rohit scored 24 on 38, and Kohli looked like he was just going to keep going in Vadodara. But the dots started to erupt as Shubman Gill scored 56 off 53 balls, and soon afterwards the pacer Kohli and Shreyas Iyer both scored for cheap. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have been trying to keep India on track.
KL Rahul’s Fighting Century Goes in Vain as India Struggles Against New Zealand
KL Rahul had earlier scored a shaky innings on a slow surface.
Rahul hit a gritty unbeaten 112 on 92 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, making key partnerships in the second half and stealing control from the Kiwis, who had previously swept through India’s formidable batting line-up.
New Zealand had taken control, disciplined and a bit of luck, as India had dropped from 99 for one to 118 for four before halfway.
Will Young And Daryl Mitchell Partnership
Will Young and Daryl Mitchell, the architects of New Zealand’s 3-0 Test series win over India in their previous visit, batted aggressively, even as the asking rate hovered above six an over.
They managed a little more than five during their second-wicket partnership, which consumed 152 balls for 162 runs, and there was no late hiccup to prevent a turnaround.
Young’s 87 from 98 balls; 7 fours; and Mitchell’s skill at hitting sweep shots was matched by his ability to shoot nearly all kinds of sweep shots to earn his third ton against India and eighth overall, 131 not out from 117 balls; 11 fours, 2 sixes.
New Zealand’s Spin Attack Outshines India’s in Recent 50-Over Match
In the 2nd ODI match, the victory for New Zealand in a 50-overs match also brought back the focus on a problem that India has been having in Tests for about two years: the home side’s spin attack being outpaced by the visitors, though this has been mostly in red-ball cricket.
Jayden Lennox, a rising left-arm spinner who was brought on this trip to replace Mitchell Santner, kept the Indian batters from returning 10-0-42-1, while Kuldeep Yadav (10-0-82-1) kept bowling short and failed to let the ball fly despite Rahul telling him behind the wickets.
And when Kuldeep did fly it and hit it hard, Prasidh Krishna threw a regulation chance at long-on in the 36th over to give Mitchell a lifeline on 80.
Kuldeep finally took Young off the third-wicket stand, Mohammed Siraj pinned Mitchell leg-before soon after, but this was reversed by DRS as there was an inside edge.
Michael Bracewell also returned a tidy 1/34 from his 10 overs earlier, a total of 89 runs for two wickets in 23 overs by visiting spinners, including Glenn Phillips’ 3-0-13-0.
For their part, Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja (8-0-44-0) gave away 1/126 of their combined 18 overs.
New Zealand also held firm when Harshit Rana (1/52) and Siraj steamed in with the new ball to exert immense pressure, reaching 34/1 after the powerplay.
