June 25, 2026: Once upon a time, India’s export for defence equipment was null. While nothing has been fully confirmed, their growing international interest in Indian-developed defence platforms. More importantly, they underscore how defence exports are becoming an important component of India’s strategic and economic engagement with key partners.
What We Know About the UAE Discussions
According to multiple reports, the UAE has initiated discussions with India regarding the purchase of the BrahMos missile system and the Akashteer air defence network. If the deal is happening, it could significantly strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.
The BrahMos missile is one of the most prominent defence products, widely popular as one of the fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles in the world. Developed together by India and Russia, the missile has become a symbol of India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities. Because of the agreement incorporating Russian technology, any export transaction would require Moscow’s approval. However, reports suggest that this is not expected to pose a significant obstacle.
The discussions are still in their early stages, and neither side has announced timelines, financial details, or procurement commitments. As a result, the main focus point remains on the strategic significance of the talks rather than the specifics of a potential agreement.
Beyond BrahMos: Building an Integrated Defence Ecosystem
Another remarkable factor about the talks was the interest in both BrahMos and Akashteer. BrahMos denotes India’s offensive strike capability while Akashteer enhances India’s air defence capability through integrated command and control systems.
However, the opportunity of exporting various defence systems at once signifies the transformation happening in the Indian defence industry where instead of exporting individual defence equipment, the Indian defence industries are increasingly manufacturing integrated defence equipment with surveillance, missiles, communication and air defence capabilities.
Additionally, BrahMos Aerospace is busy developing the new generation BrahMos-NG missiles. According to the reports, the BrahMos-NG missile will be lighter and versatile compared to the existing version. However, there is a lot that needs to be done before all the technical specifications concerning range, deployment capacity and timelines are known.
Defence Exports Become a Strategic Growth Story
These conversations occur amid rapid expansion of the defence exports by India. The country is increasingly making use of defence equipment, maintenance services, and technology alliances as part of its export portfolio. These contracts help build strategic ties and enhance India’s geopolitical clout aside from economic gains that can be accrued from them.
Recent reports also show an increasing interest for BrahMos missiles from several nations in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. While some of the negotiations and deals have become public knowledge, many others are still to be confirmed and approved through relevant authorities.
From India’s point of view, all of the recent developments are much more than individual contracts as each of them reinforces its reputation as a provider of defence technologies while fostering domestic manufacturing in line with its vision of achieving self-sufficiency in the production of defence systems. Even if nothing comes out of the UAE talks, they illustrate the general tendency of growing recognition of Indian defence systems as global products capable of solving both domestic and foreign challenges.
As India keeps developing its defence manufacturing sector, the BrahMos project will serve as one of the best illustrations of the country’s rising presence on the global defence industry.
