Bubble Wrap is a creation dating back to 1957 from the work of engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes who initially created it through sealing of two plastic shower curtains having air bubbles sandwiched in between. After failing to create wallpaper using the product, the engineers went ahead to search for alternative uses of the product until they found out about its uses as protective packaging. The success of these engineers culminated in the formation of a company known as Sealed Air Corporation that has grown to become one of the major manufacturers of protective packaging products globally and is now in operation in over 100 countries around the world.
“Bubble Wrap wasn’t the product that changed the world—the idea of protecting products before they reached consumers did.”
The technology started to catch up with the development of e-commerce. With millions of shipments per day from companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Alibaba, and others online sellers, packaging has stopped being a technical requirement, but rather a necessity for the firm. Each package that was damaged meant money back, replacement of products, additional costs on logistics and dissatisfied customers. Gradually, Bubble Wrap became part of the customer journey to prevent the firm from losses and create trust among customers. Bubble Wrap almost started to become a necessity like the product inside the package.
Moreover, Bubble Wrap gained cultural significance too. Pop sound that the wrapping produced while popping was becoming the best stress reliever and led to the establishment of Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day and countless numbers of YouTube videos. However, in 2015 Sealed Air has launched an innovative design of Bubble Wrap which is delivered in flat to save the costs on transportation and storage. Even though the technology allowed to enhance the efficiency of the supply chain process, there was negative feedback regarding the lack of “pop” sound. It showed how surprising fact was the fact that Bubble Wrap became more popular than its purpose.
Today, as companies move towards sustainable packaging and biodegradable alternatives, Bubble Wrap continues to evolve. Its journey remains one of business history’s greatest examples of successful reinvention, proving that sometimes the most valuable innovations are not the products consumers buy, but the invisible solutions that keep global commerce moving safely.
