Bamboo is emerging as a major opportunity for India’s rural economy, with Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade calling it the “strength and wealth” of rural India at the Bamboo Economy & Sustainability Summit 2026 in Mumbai.

Bagade highlighted bamboo’s potential to replace plastic and create rural employment, describing it as “green gold.” He pointed to its growing use in packaging, cutlery, textiles, bioethanol, biocharcoal, and biomass pellets.

Pasha Patel, Chairman of the Maharashtra State Agricultural Price Commission, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to remove bamboo from the legal definition of “tree” under the Indian Forest Act framework, calling it a turning point for farmers and the industry.

Industry veteran Atul Chaturvedi said bamboo could see rapid growth once cellulosic ethanol becomes competitively priced, potentially expanding its role in India’s energy and sustainability landscape.
