The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licence of Surya Food & Agro Ltd., the maker of Priyagold biscuits, and sanctioned prosecution after an inspection reportedly found cattle-feed bran being used in biscuit manufacturing.
According to the regulator’s statement, the inspection followed a consumer complaint. Bran stored in gunny bags marked for cattle feed was allegedly being used as a source of fibre in biscuit production.
The inspection also identified deficiencies involving plant hygiene, pest control, raw material storage, segregation, personnel hygiene and premises maintenance. Following the reported violations, the company’s licence was suspended and prosecution was sanctioned.
The manufacturer had faced regulatory scrutiny earlier. In December 2025, food safety officials in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, banned the sale of a batch of Priyagold Butter Delite biscuits after laboratory tests reportedly found sulphite levels above permissible limits.
The latest action raises concerns about food safety and manufacturing practices. However, sanction for prosecution does not amount to a conviction, and the allegations remain subject to legal proceedings. The company’s response was not available at the time of writing.
