External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has warned that the world could face a major food crisis in the coming months, citing disruptions to grain shipments, fertiliser shortages and the possibility of a strong El Niño.

Jaishankar said major grain exporters could face difficulties in sending supplies, particularly through the Black Sea, while fertiliser availability remains a concern as key producers are concentrated in regions including the Middle East and Russia.

A possible super El Niño could add another layer of pressure by disrupting rainfall and crop production across major agricultural regions.

The warning also comes against the backdrop of what Jaishankar has described as a broader “4F crisis” affecting the Global South food, fuel, fertiliser and finance.

For India, fertiliser prices and availability, global grain shipments, international commodity prices and weather conditions will remain key factors to watch. The warning is forward-looking, and the actual impact will depend on how weather, trade routes and global supplies develop.
