What’s the deal? Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has called for developing a bamboo based economy in the state to support sustainable development, create rural livelihoods and provide alternatives to plastic. Speaking at the Bamboo Economy and Sustainability Summit 2026 in Mumbai on September 27, Varma said Maharashtra could draw from bamboo-based models in Tripura and develop districts such as Gadchiroli as hubs for a stronger bamboo value chain.
Why now? The summit was held against the backdrop of World Bamboo Day, with discussions focused on climate change, sustainable development, employment and economic opportunities linked to bamboo based economy . Varma called for greater use of technology, research and commercialisation to move bamboo beyond traditional applications and develop value-added products.
What it means. A stronger bamboo value chain could connect farmers, tribal communities, artisans, manufacturers and entrepreneurs. Varma said traditional Indian bamboo skills could be combined with modern design, processing technology, branding and digital marketing to help Maharashtra’s bamboo based economy products reach markets across India and overseas.
By the numbers. Representatives from 13 states attended the summit. Maharashtra Minister for Employment Guarantee Scheme, Horticulture and Kharsan Land Bharat Gogawale said the state provides financial assistance for bamboo cultivation and support for maintenance during the first 3 years after plantation.
What’s next? The focus will be on expanding cultivation, developing bamboo-based industries and creating markets for value-added products. Maharashtra’s existing policy work also identifies opportunities for bamboo biomass in energy production and ethanol, adding potential industrial applications beyond traditional products.
