In a candid interview, Rakesh Valeja, Managing Director of Thames Side Sensors India Pvt Ltd, reflects on the company’s journey from its UK origins over 40 years ago to becoming a trusted name in India’s weighing and automation industry. With a sharp focus on durability, availability, and round the clock customer support, Thames Side has grown from just two clients in India in 2011 to over 800 today. Valeja explains how a “stock and sell” strategy, a five-year warranty promise, and a transition toward digital technology have helped the company stay ahead in a competitive global market.

A Legacy Built on Precision

Thames Side Sensors was founded in the United Kingdom more than four decades ago, specializing in load cells and weighing electronics primarily for process packaging and industrial automation. These components may not be visible to everyday consumers, but they are critical to industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and manufacturing where accuracy in measurement directly impacts quality and compliance.

The Indian arm of the company was established in 2011 under the leadership of Rakesh Valeja. Starting with just two customers, the company has steadily expanded its footprint and now serves over 800 clients across the country. That growth, Valeja explains, was not accidental, it was built on consistency and trust.

Durability That Defies Industry Norms

One of the strongest pillars of Thames Side’s reputation is product longevity. In an industry where components often require frequent replacements, Thames Side products are known to last 15 to 20 years.

“The life of the product would be 15 or 20 years which was very unusual during those times in the industry,” Valeja notes.

This durability significantly reduces downtime and maintenance costs for customers, making the brand a preferred choice for long-term industrial projects. The company reinforces this confidence by offering a five-year warranty something Valeja proudly says no other Indian competitor provides. That bold guarantee reflects their belief in the quality and engineering standards of their products.

Winning Against Global Competition

Competing with established Japanese and German brands was never going to be easy. Instead of competing only on price, Thames Side identified a critical gap in the market: lead time.

“We realized the lead time of products was very high we realized this is the opportunity if we stock and sell,” Valeja explains.

While competitors often took weeks or months to deliver, Thames Side adopted a “stock and sell” model. By maintaining ready inventory, they ensured faster delivery and immediate dispatch within hours. In industries where production downtime can cost lakhs per hour, availability becomes a decisive advantage.

A Managing Director Who Answers Sunday Calls

Beyond products and strategy, Valeja emphasizes service culture. His approach is refreshingly hands-on.

“If a customer calls me on a Sunday, even as a managing director, I’m available to respond we can deliver within 2 hours to dispatch.”

This level of accessibility sends a strong message: leadership is directly accountable. For customers, that translates into confidence and long-term partnerships rather than transactional relationships.

From Analog to Digital: Preparing for the Future

The weighing industry is undergoing a digital transformation. Traditionally, many systems were analog-based, even if they appeared digital due to display interfaces.

“People think it’s a digital product but these are analog. Now we are converting those analog into digital technology,” Valeja explains.

Thames Side is preparing to launch four new digital products within the next six months, marking a strategic shift toward smarter, more integrated automation solutions. As industries adopt Industry 4.0 practices, digital precision and connectivity are becoming non-negotiable.

Defined by Reliability and Accuracy

When asked to describe Thames Side in one word Valeja chose two: “Reliability and Accuracy”. These aren’t just marketing phrases they represent the core of their value proposition.

From long-lasting load cells to rapid delivery and 24/7 technical support the company’s journey reflects steady growth rooted in performance rather than hype. With four decades of global legacy and a rapidly expanding Indian presence Thames Side Sensors India is not just supplying components it is shaping the backbone of industrial precision.
