The candidate introduced himself as an experienced video editor who had earned Rs 40,000 at a previous agency, but it turned out he couldn’t manage even simple tasks.
With artificial intelligence (AI) accessible at their fingertips and its myriad tools affecting the job market, companies, including startups, are reforming their hiring process. But, hiring the right talent in this age and time is a challenge.
No Background Check, Big Loss: Startup Duped for ₹2 Lakh
Ashutosh Gupta, the Chief Business Officer of Praper Media, a startup, recounted his experience of losing more than Rs 2 lakh due to an employee who lied on their resume. He shared the incident on LinkedIn, stating, “We hired someone who lied about everything on their resume. By the time we found out, we’d lost 2 lakhs.”
The post claims that the organisation’s failure to do background checks was the cause of the incident because the candidate appeared confident and experienced. “In the days when Praper was smaller, it didn’t seem necessary to do background verification. We hired him by interviewing and gut feeling.”
He also claimed to be earning Rs 40,000 at his previous organisation. “We gave him a reaction video edit as a test assignment. Our junior editors do 3 of these in a day. He took 2 days to complete it. But the output was unusable,” Gupta shared.
‘For someone who claimed 3 years of experience and Rs 40K salary at their last agency? That made no sense,’ he added.
Exposed: Fake Salary, Fake Exit, Fake Manager
On becoming suspicious, the startup contacted the candidate’s previous employer. “Lie #1: He was earning Rs 25K, not Rs 40K. So we’d given them an 80% raise. Lie #2: He wasn’t “resigned.” He was fired. For performance issues. Lie #3: The “manager” we called? Their friend. Glowing a fake review,” Gupta recounted.
He went on to share the cost the company had to bear because of the lie- Rs 1.35 lakh on three months’ salary, Rs 40,000 on training time and Rs 25,000 on hiring a replacement.
There was also delayed client work, affected team morale, and wasted time. In four months, the company lost over Rs 2 lakh.
