Tejaswin Shankar continued his impressive run in combined events, winning the gold medal in the men’s heptathlon at the ongoing Asian Indoor Athletics Championships on Sunday. His victory sealed the only gold medal for India at the tournament, which finished sixth in the medals standings. China won 34 medals, 10 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze.

Record-Breaking Shankar Wins Gold with Historic 5993 Points

Shankar scored 5993 points, the highest total ever. He did so by surpassing his national record of 5650 points set in 2021 and his championship record of 5928 points set in 2012.

Shankar started the day 1 event dominant and remained second in the final three events. He finished 8.02 seconds into the 60m hurdles, scoring 977 points and going into the finals with a huge lead over his rivals. He gained 673 points in the pole vault, up to 5163 points. He finished second in the final 1000m, 2:43.91, earning 830 points and winning the gold medal.

Shankar led the day with a season-best 2.23m in the 60m dash, long jump, shot put, and high jump.

Shankar was a remarkable performer, but was disappointed to have fallen just seven points short of the 6000 mark. He described the sport as “cruel” in a sarcastic post on social media.

Shankar, who is also the world’s number one decathlon leader, is now looking to reach 8000 points in the outdoor decathlon.
