Asian markets traded mostly higher, while the US stock market ended mixed overnight after the Fed’s policy and Chair Jerome Powell cut interest rates, citing worries over a slowing US labour market and rising inflation.

KEY THEMES FOR THE DAY
- The US Federal Reserve decided to cut the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, amid signs of growing stress in the labour market. The FOMC voted by an 11:1 majority to cut the federal funds rate by 25 bps to a range of 4% to 4.25%. The Fed projected two more quarter-percentage-point cuts this year.
- China’s central bank left the borrowing cost of its seven-day reverse repurchase agreements unchanged. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) injected 487 billion yuan ($68.56 billion) worth of seven-day reverse repos through open market operations, keeping the rate steady at 1.40% from the previous operation.
- The EU unveiled a new strategic agenda to boost ties with India in defence, trade and technology, but flagged concerns over India’s military drills and Russian oil imports. It has also accepted India’s concerns on agriculture and dairy in FTA talks, though issues remain on automobiles, liquor, non-tariff measures, and services.
- SEBI is exploring ways to expand commodity derivatives participation to foreign investors, banks, insurers, and pension funds, while industry players have urged allowing new contracts to begin with cash settlement to attract investors, boost liquidity, and simplify operations.
- The State Bank of India (SBI) on Wednesday said it has received ₹8,889 crore from the divestment of about 413.44 crore equity shares of Yes Bank Ltd (YBL), being equivalent to 13.19 per cent (approximately) of the latter’s shares to Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), at ₹21.50 per equity share.
- HDFC Asset Management Company, Bosch, Muthoot Finance, Cummins India, Polycab India, Dixon Technologies, Swiggy and Canara Bank are likely to be upgraded from mid-cap to large-cap in the next Association of Mutual Fund in India’s semi-annual reclassification in January 2026, according to Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research.
- India’s power sector CO₂ emissions fell 1% in H1 2025, only the second drop in nearly 50 years, driven by record clean energy additions and lower demand amid mild weather, CREA data showed.
