The hot charging process enables the direct transfer of hot billets from the continuous casting machine to the rolling mill. By reducing the need for reheating, the company expects lower fuel consumption and reduced scale loss during production.
According to the company, the process also supports its sustainability goals by optimizing thermal energy usage and lowering the carbon footprint of steel manufacturing operations.
The trial successfully produced Fe 550D grade MS TMT rebars, a product widely used in infrastructure and construction projects due to its high tensile strength, ductility and seismic resistance. The company noted that demand for such products is growing among real estate developers and infrastructure players.
Rathi Steel believes the development will help improve operational efficiency, reduce production costs and strengthen its product portfolio as infrastructure activity continues to grow across India.
EQMint Analysis
This announcement may look technical, but it has direct implications for profitability.
Steel manufacturers constantly battle energy costs, and reheating billets is one of the more energy-intensive parts of the process. A successful hot charging system allows Rathi Steel to use existing heat more effectively, which can improve margins over time.
The ESG angle is also worth noting. Lower fuel consumption means lower emissions, something that is becoming increasingly important for industrial companies seeking to improve sustainability metrics.
The bigger takeaway is operational efficiency. If the company scales this process successfully across production, it could see benefits through lower costs, better energy utilization and improved competitiveness in the TMT rebar market.
