The platforms penalised include Zepto, IndiGo, PhysicsWallah, Aaj Jindal, FirstCry, PharmEasy, McAfee, BookMyShow and SpiceJet.

According to the CCPA, these platforms have been directed to discontinue practices that mislead consumers or influence purchasing decisions through manipulative design techniques.

What Are Dark Patterns?

Dark patterns are user interface designs that encourage or pressure users into making choices they may not have intended.

These practices can include:

  • Hidden charges during checkout.
  • Forced subscriptions or difficult cancellation processes.
  • Misleading countdown timers.
  • Confusing opt-in or opt-out options.
  • False urgency or scarcity messages.

Regulators globally have increased scrutiny of such practices as digital commerce continues to expand.

CCPA’s Action

The consumer watchdog said the identified platforms were using design elements that could influence consumer behaviour unfairly.

The authority has directed the companies to stop using such practices and ensure greater transparency in their digital interfaces.

The move is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen consumer protection in India’s rapidly growing digital economy.

Why It Matters

India has witnessed significant growth in online shopping, travel bookings, education technology and digital healthcare platforms. As more consumers transact online, regulators are placing greater emphasis on transparent pricing, informed consent and fair digital practices.

The latest action sends a strong message that deceptive interface designs will face increased regulatory scrutiny.

EQMint Analysis

The CCPA’s crackdown reflects a growing global trend toward regulating digital platforms and improving consumer protection standards. Companies may now need to reassess their user interfaces, subscription models and checkout processes to ensure compliance with emerging regulations.

For consumers, the move could lead to more transparent online experiences and reduce misleading sales tactics.

Current View on CCPA

The action against nine major platforms marks one of the most significant enforcement measures against dark patterns in India. Businesses operating digital platforms are likely to review their user experience and compliance frameworks as regulators continue to tighten oversight.
