South African jurist of Indian Tamil origin Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, recognising her work in strengthening international justice and prosecuting serious crimes.
Pillay previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 and held judicial positions at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.
She also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025. She currently serves as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the case concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Pillay began her legal career during apartheid, defending activists and challenging racial discrimination. The Nobel Committee praised her courage, integrity and commitment to universal legal principles.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor in prize money. The award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo, Norway.
