Elon Musk has escalated his public dispute over Starlink’s delayed launch in India with a sarcastic post on X addressing Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani as “Prime Minister Ambani.” The SpaceX CEO questioned whether Ambani would allow Starlink to compete in India, intensifying a debate over satellite internet approvals, market competition and the government’s regulatory process.
What Musk’s “Prime Minister Ambani” Post Says
In his post on 9 October 2026, Musk sarcastically apologised for not recognising Ambani as “the real boss of India.” He suggested that established market players would prefer to protect their market position and asked whether Starlink could be allowed to compete.
Musk also argued that satellite internet could connect underserved communities, improve educational access for children and help small businesses reach international customers.
In a follow-up message, he highlighted Starlink’s role during natural disasters, claiming the service could provide connectivity when conventional communication systems fail.
The reference to “Prime Minister Ambani” was a sarcastic remark. Mukesh Ambani is the chairman of Reliance Industries and is not India’s prime minister.
How the Starlink India Controversy Began
The dispute intensified on 8 October, when Musk questioned why Starlink had not begun commercial operations in India despite years of regulatory compliance efforts. He had previously accused unnamed business interests of blocking the company’s entry to protect their market position.
Reports by Outlook India and OdishaBytes covered Musk’s allegations and the wider political debate surrounding the dispute.
According to TechCrunch, Musk’s earlier comments came hours after a Starlink executive reiterated the company’s commitment to the Indian market at India Mobile Congress in New Delhi.
Musk’s allegations have not established that Reliance or Ambani influenced the regulatory process.
Indian Government Rejects Allegations of Bias
The Department of Telecommunications rejected claims that India’s satellite communication approval process was discriminatory. The government described the allegations as “baseless and misconceived” and maintained that all satellite communication operators must comply with applicable regulatory and security requirements.
According to Deccan Herald, the dispute centres on the approval process and the security requirements governing satellite communication services.
Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani also said the licensing issue was not specific to Starlink. As reported by Outlook Business, the government maintained that satellite operators were subject to the same regulatory framework, with security clearance remaining an important part of the process.
Rahul Gandhi Responds to Elon Musk
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi joined the discussion after Musk’s remarks about powerful business interests in India.
Gandhi responded with “Welcome to India, Elon,” adding a remark about waiting to discover “the other guy.” Although he did not name anyone, the comment was interpreted by several reports as an indirect reference to industrialist Gautam Adani.
The exchange added a political dimension to a dispute that began with Starlink’s pending market entry. Further coverage appeared in Outlook India and The CSR Journal.
Reliance Jio, Airtel and Starlink: The Competition Question
Reliance Jio’s position in India’s telecommunications market has made Ambani a central figure in the debate. Jio and Bharti Airtel are developing satellite connectivity services of their own, even as both companies have agreed to distribute Starlink services in India.
This creates a complex relationship involving both competition and commercial partnerships. Starlink could expand broadband access in remote regions where conventional fibre infrastructure and mobile networks are difficult to deploy. At the same time, established telecommunications operators have their own interests in India’s growing connectivity market.
An analysis published by the South China Morning Post examined Musk’s allegations in the context of India’s telecommunications industry and the competition surrounding satellite internet.
However, the public accusations do not, by themselves, demonstrate that Reliance influenced Starlink’s approvals. Ascendants also discussed the allegations and the broader controversy. Reliance has not confirmed any role in delaying Starlink’s launch, and Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani reportedly declined to comment.
Why Starlink’s India Launch Matters
India’s large population and geographically diverse communities make satellite broadband a potential option for improving connectivity in underserved areas. Satellite services can reach locations where conventional infrastructure is expensive or difficult to build, potentially supporting education, small businesses and access to digital services.
For Starlink, India represents a significant potential market. For existing telecom operators, the arrival of another satellite internet provider could introduce additional competition and new distribution opportunities.
The central issue remains whether Starlink can complete India’s regulatory and security requirements and begin commercial operations.
What Happens Next?
Starlink’s launch timeline depends on the completion of the required regulatory procedures, including applicable security clearances and spectrum-related requirements. Musk’s public criticism has brought renewed attention to the issue, but it remains unclear whether the exchange will accelerate the approval process.
For now, the dispute highlights the tension between attracting new satellite internet providers, maintaining regulatory oversight and ensuring fair competition in India’s telecommunications sector.
