Synopsis:

  • Fairfax’s subsidiary has been selected to acquire a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank in a proposed ₹52,878 crore deal.
  • The sale follows a major turnaround in the bank’s asset quality, with gross NPAs falling to 2.32% by March 2026.
  • Fairfax aims to build a broader financial services platform combining banking, insurance and investments, subject to approvals.

IDBI Bank’s proposed ₹52,878 crore sale marks a significant development in India’s banking sector. The Government of India and LIC are selling their combined 60.72% stake to a subsidiary of Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings.

The deal follows a major turnaround. IDBI Bank’s gross non-performing assets fell from 31.78% in September 2018 to 2.32% in March 2026. The RBI had lifted restrictions under its Prompt Corrective Action framework in March 2021.

Fairfax’s broader vision involves combining banking, insurance and investment services, potentially involving IDBI Bank, Go Digit and IIFL Capital. However, these proposed contributions remain subject to regulatory approvals.

Under the proposed shareholding structure, Fairfax would hold 60.72%, LIC 19%, the government 15% and other shareholders 5.28%.

For customers, the transaction does not mean immediate changes to banking services. For investors, future performance will depend on regulatory approvals, execution and profitability.

The bigger question is whether Fairfax can turn IDBI Bank’s turnaround into an integrated financial services business.
