Synopsis:

      • Economist Parakala Prabhakar is set to join a nationwide protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on October 23.

      • The protest will demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the SIR exercise.

      • Actor Prakash Raj, advocate Prashant Bhushan and other public figures are also expected to participate.

Parakala Prabhakar anti-SIR protest is drawing attention ahead of a nationwide demonstration scheduled for October 23, 2026. Prabhakar, an economist and husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected to join the march organised by the People Against SIR alliance.

The protest centres on concerns about the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR), an exercise to review and update electoral rolls. Critics argue that the process risks excluding eligible voters, while the Election Commission’s stated objective is to maintain accurate voter lists.

    Who Will Join the Protest?

Prabhakar is expected to share the platform with actor-activist Prakash Raj, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke. Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and other activists are also expected to participate. The alliance has invited parties in the INDIA bloc to join, although their participation has not been confirmed.

    What Are the Protesters Demanding?

The People Against SIR alliance is demanding that the revision exercise be scrapped, eligible voters’ names removed from electoral rolls be restored, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign.

Prabhakar has previously criticised the SIR process, arguing that the removal of eligible voters’ names could undermine their voting rights. The alliance has called for demonstrations across the country under the slogan, “Har Haath Mein Tiranga, Har Gali Mein Jantar Mantar.”

The planned march adds to the growing public debate over electoral transparency, voter registration and the safeguards needed to ensure that every eligible citizen can exercise their right to vote.
