OpenAI’s first-ever report on India’s AI “Capability Gap” reveals a striking geographical divide: Delhi-NCR has emerged as the national leader in ChatGPT adoption. The study shows that the top 10 Indian cities account for nearly 50% of all ChatGPT users, despite representing only 10% of the country’s population.

While regions like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai lead in advanced tasks like AI-driven coding (using OpenAI’s Codex), other parts of India are using the tool for essential public services. In the Eastern states (Assam, Odisha), users are heavily engaged with ChatGPT for education, while Jammu & Kashmir and Kerala lead the nation in using AI for health and wellness queries.

OpenAI’s Managing Director (International), Oliver Jay, noted that closing the “Capability Gap” is now a priority. To drive broader adoption, OpenAI is partnering with Indian universities and firms like Razorpay and TCS to move AI usage beyond urban “early adopters” and into the hands of the wider population.
