June 22, 2026: The story of India’s economic growth is often told through the lens of big business houses, unicorn start-ups and foreign investment. Behind many of the country’s fastest growing industries is a quieter but equally important contributor: the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector.

MSMEs have become an inseparable part of the Indian economy contributing to approximately 30-31% of the country’s GDP and a significant portion of its exports. Their impact is felt across manufacturing, services, retail, logistics, technology and emerging industries. But as these are working in many sectors, one question is still under discussion that which industry has been grown more because of them.
For decades, manufacturing has been the sector most commonly associated with MSMEs. Small businesses are the backbone of India’s industrial supply chains, from automotive parts and textiles to engineering goods and consumer products. Thousands of these are often dependent on big corporates for sourcing, assembly, packaging and specialized production. This interlinked structure has facilitated industries to develop efficiently, and generate employment opportunities in urban and rural areas.
Government initiatives like Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, Make in India and infrastructure investments further strengthen manufacturing ecosystems. Indian MSMEs are finding increasing opportunities in export-oriented manufacturing networks as global companies seek alternatives to concentrated supply chains. According to the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise sector, registered MSMEs in manufacturing enterprises account for nearly 38%.
But the conversation is slowly moving away from trying to identify a single winning sector, to how MSMEs are making themselves indispensable in a range of industries. Today’s small businesses are no longer restricted to workshops and production units. They are getting more involved in technology, logistics, sustainability solutions, e-commerce, professional services and innovation-driven enterprises.
This evolution is a reflection of a bigger transformation happening in the Indian economy. MSMEs are transitioning from being peripheral suppliers to becoming central players in growth ecosystems. Manufacturing may still be the biggest winner today, but the services sector is quickly catching up, building a future for India’s small-business landscape that is more diversified and resilient.
With India’s aspirations to be a global manufacturing hub and a digital economy, the real story of success may not be which sector benefits the most from MSMEs but how they are becoming the common thread that binds the country’s most dynamic industries.
