The Indian government has brought smartphone screen protectors under mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, introducing new quality requirements for products sold in the country.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), through a notification dated September 21, added smartphone screen protectors to the compulsory registration framework. The new requirements will take effect from April 1, 2027.
Under the rules, manufacturers and importers will need to ensure their products comply with the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 before they can be sold or distributed in India. The standards cover parameters including thickness, dimensions, light transmission, defects and strength. Compliant products will also need the BIS Standard Mark.
The move is aimed at curbing the sale of substandard screen protectors and encouraging domestic manufacturing. Industry body ICEA estimates the regulated market could support a ₹12,000–16,000 crore quality-driven industry and create around 60,000 direct and indirect jobs.
