International Podcast Day, observed on September 30, celebrates the growth of podcasting from a niche digital format into a mainstream medium for news, entertainment, education and storytelling.
Podcasting emerged in the early 2000s, with Adam Curry and Dave Winer credited with key early developments that helped distribute audio through RSS feeds. The term “podcasting” was coined by journalist Ben Hammersley in 2004.
The format has since expanded beyond traditional audio. Video podcasts are increasingly becoming part of the ecosystem, with platforms such as YouTube and Spotify helping creators reach wider audiences.
In the UK, Ofcom reported that monthly podcast consumption reached 39% of adults in 2026, up from 18% in 2019. Video-inclusive consumption stood at 43%.
With smartphones, streaming platforms and creator-led media continuing to expand, podcasts have become an important part of the global digital media landscape.
