What’s the deal? Maharashtra has set July 2027 as the deadline for bike taxi aggregators including Ola, Uber and Rapido to move to 100% electric fleets. The State Transport Department has communicated a phased transition plan to ride-hailing companies and Regional Transport Offices across the state, following directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Why now? The move puts electric mobility at the centre of Maharashtra’s rapidly expanding bike-taxi sector. The government had considered allowing a 50:50 mix of petrol and electric motorcycles, but the proposal was rejected by the state Cabinet over concerns that higher EV costs could delay fleet adoption.

What it means. Operators currently running petrol-powered bike taxis will get 6 months in the first phase to comply with the EV requirement. Operators holding provisional or temporary licences under the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules, 2025 will receive an additional 3 months, creating a total transition window of up to 9 months for eligible operators.

The rider challenge. The shift could have a direct financial impact on bike-taxi drivers. The Maharashtra Bike Taxi Welfare Association had sought around 18 months for the transition, arguing that many riders come from middle- and lower-middle-income households and may find the upfront cost of an electric motorcycle difficult to manage. Riders have also raised concerns about charging infrastructure and vehicle life.

What companies wanted. Bike-taxi aggregators had sought a longer transition period, with reports indicating requests for an extension until 2030. The companies cited the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy and the practical requirements involved in replacing large numbers of petrol motorcycles.

What’s next? The next phase will depend heavily on EV availability, financing options and charging infrastructure for riders. For aggregators, the deadline creates a need to rethink fleet procurement and operating models well ahead of July 2027.

EQMint Take on Maharashtra bike taxi EV deadline on July 2027

Maharashtra’s decision could make bike taxis an important testing ground for India’s electric mobility transition. The environmental case is clear, while the business case will depend on whether drivers can absorb vehicle costs and access reliable charging without putting pressure on their earnings.
