Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI has signed a five-year agreement with India’s Defence Ministry to develop and deploy artificial intelligence applications for the armed forces.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), establishes a framework for AI projects across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, along with joint military organisations.
The applications will focus on military operations, training and decision support. Proposed capabilities include target acquisition and data fusion, which involves combining information from different sources to support operational decisions.
The agreement will also provide access to a shared technology stack, including foundation models, agentic AI infrastructure and geospatial systems. The work will be handled by Chanakya, Sarvam’s security and defence-focused division, using technologies that include its Sarvam 105B foundation model.
The financial value of the agreement and details of individual projects have not been disclosed.
The partnership comes as India pushes to reduce dependence on foreign technology in sensitive sectors. Its emphasis on sovereign infrastructure and human oversight reflects the importance of data security and accountability in military AI deployment.
