Synopsis:

    • Bill Gates warned that businesses could increasingly replace human workers with AI, raising concerns about jobs and economic inequality.

    • Microsoft has offered voluntary exit packages to around 60,000 eligible employees across the US, India, the UK and Canada.

    • Although Microsoft says the programme is not driven by AI, the move highlights growing questions about workforce restructuring and the cost of AI investment.

Microsoft’s voluntary buyout offer to around 60,000 employees has brought renewed attention to Bill Gates’ warning about artificial intelligence and the future of work.

In an interview with The Observer, the Microsoft co-founder cautioned that businesses could increasingly choose machines over people as AI becomes capable of performing more tasks. He also raised concerns about declining tax revenues if automation reduces the number of people in employment.

Microsoft’s Voluntary Exit Offer

Announced on October 26, 2026, Microsoft’s programme covers eligible employees at level 70 and below in selected teams across the United States, India, the United Kingdom and Canada. The offer provides financial support to employees who choose to leave, with decisions due by early December and departures expected later that month.

Microsoft employed approximately 223,000 people globally as of June 2026, making the eligible group roughly a quarter of its workforce. However, the offer does not mean that 60,000 employees will necessarily leave the company.

The programme comes as Microsoft seeks to manage costs while making substantial investments in AI infrastructure. The company has said the offer is intended to give eligible employees more flexibility during organisational changes, while reporting has linked the move to cost management and AI spending.

The Bigger Question: Will AI Replace Jobs?

Gates has argued that AI could eventually perform a growing range of white-collar tasks before expanding into other types of work. He has also raised the possibility of taxing AI use to help address the economic consequences of automation.

Microsoft’s buyout announcement and Gates’ remarks are separate developments; there is no confirmed evidence that the offer was introduced because of his warning or that AI directly caused the programme.

For India’s technology workforce, the developments underline an important question: as companies invest more in AI, how will they balance productivity gains with employment, reskilling and long-term job security?
