Synopsis:

    • The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has revised maximum retail prices for 543 formulations of 137 anti-cancer drugs.

    • Thiotepa has seen a price reduction of ₹72,921.53 per vial, while one palbociclib formulation has recorded a 93.3% reduction.

    • The revised prices will take effect from November 9, 2026, with estimated annual savings of ₹2,500–₹3,500 crore for patients.

Cancer treatment in India is set to become more affordable as the government moves to reduce the prices of several anti-cancer medicines.

The NPPA has revised maximum retail prices (MRPs) for 543 formulations across 137 cancer drugs. The move follows the government’s decision to cap trade margins on the identified medicines at 30% of their maximum retail prices.

The biggest reduction in rupee terms is for thiotepa, a chemotherapy drug, with one 100 mg vial dropping from ₹80,071.86 to ₹7,150.33. Meanwhile, one palbociclib formulation, used to treat certain types of breast cancer, has seen its price fall from ₹40,421.33 to ₹2,720, a reduction of 93.3%.

The government estimates that the changes could save patients between ₹2,500 crore and ₹3,500 crore annually. The revised prices will come into effect on November 9, 2026.

However, the reductions are not uniform across all cancer medicines. Several top-selling patented drugs have not seen price cuts, meaning the actual benefit will depend on the specific medicine and brand prescribed.
