Synopsis:

      • Carnelian Mutual Fund plans to cap its new small-cap fund at ₹5,000 crore in assets under management (AUM), after which fresh lump-sum investments will stop.

      • The fund aims to maintain portfolio flexibility and focus on 30–50 companies rather than expand its assets at the cost of stock selection.

      • The new fund offer (NFO) is open until October 30, with a minimum investment of ₹500, and the fund is scheduled to reopen on November 13.

Carnelian Sets ₹5,000 Crore AUM Limit

Carnelian Mutual Fund has set a ₹5,000 crore assets under management (AUM) limit for its new small-cap fund to maintain flexibility in managing its portfolio. Once the fund reaches this threshold, it will stop accepting fresh lump-sum investments, while existing systematic investment plans (SIPs) will continue.

The decision is intended to prevent the fund from becoming too large to manage efficiently in the small-cap segment, where shares can have limited trading liquidity.

Focus on Stock Selection and Risk-Adjusted Returns

The fund house aims to prioritise risk-adjusted returns over accumulating a larger AUM. According to the discussion, a fund that grows too large may struggle to deploy capital without compromising its stock-selection standards.

The fund manager plans to select around 30–50 companies from a universe of approximately 1,000 small-cap stocks. This focused approach is intended to preserve flexibility when identifying investment opportunities.

    NFO Dates and Minimum Investment

The fund’s new fund offer (NFO) remains open until October 30, with a minimum investment of ₹500. It is scheduled to reopen for investments on November 13.

The proposed AUM cap means investors may need to distinguish between ongoing SIP contributions and new lump-sum investments once the threshold is reached. As with other small-cap funds, investors should consider liquidity risks, market volatility and their investment horizon before investing.
