Synopsis: Layoffs, visa uncertainty and rising housing costs are pushing Indian tech professionals to leave the US, with Texas foreclosure filings surging.
Indian tech professionals are reconsidering their American dream as immigration hurdles, job insecurity and rising housing costs make staying increasingly difficult.
According to The Times of India, Hyderabad software engineer T Kiran (name changed) returned to India after his I-140 immigrant petition was rejected. After six and a half years in the US, he left behind his belongings and car, which friends reportedly arranged to have scrapped.
His annual salary dropped from around $99,000 in the US to approximately ₹35 lakh in Hyderabad.
H-1B workers who lose their jobs generally have a limited period to find another employer or leave the country. Green card delays, rejected petitions and expensive housing can further complicate long-term plans.
The American Dream is turning into a nightmare. Layoffs, visa uncertainty and rising mortgage rates are forcing Indian techies to abandon their homes and cars and return to India. https://t.co/07izCLG5ox

The financial pressure is also reflected in foreclosure figures. The report cites over 40,000 foreclosure filings across the US in August 2026, up 12.83% year-on-year. Texas recorded 4,961 filings, a 43.46% increase. However, these figures do not establish how many cases involve Indian H-1B workers.
For India, returning professionals bring international experience but may face lower salaries. Their decisions highlight the risks of combining immigration uncertainty with long-term financial commitments.
