In a significant political development ahead of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections, the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party have decided to contest the civic polls together in an alliance. In Pimpri Chinchwad, the NCP identified by the clock symbol and the NCP represented by the trumpet symbol will join hands, marking a rare moment of unity after months of political uncertainty and public speculation.

Pawar’s Vision for Unity in Pimpri Chinchwad

Describing the alliance as long overdue, senior leader Sharad Pawar said the coming together of the two factions reflected the wishes of the people. “A parivar [family] is coming together as many people wanted this to happen,” he said, striking an emotional note that resonated with party workers and supporters alike. For many in Pimpri Chinchwad, a politically crucial urban centre in Maharashtra, the announcement was seen as a move aimed at stability and collective strength rather than individual ambition.

Pimpri Chinchwad has long been a stronghold where local governance, development politics, and organisational presence matter deeply. With civic elections often decided by grassroots connections, the alliance is expected to consolidate votes that may otherwise have been divided. Leaders from both sides Ajit and Sharad Pawar believe that fighting together will help present a united front and focus attention on civic issues such as infrastructure, housing, water supply, and public services.

Pawar, known for his grounded political messaging, framed the alliance not just as a strategic decision but as one rooted in shared values. “We come from a farming family; farming is our caste,” he said, using a powerful metaphor to underline unity beyond traditional social divisions. The statement reflected his long-standing emphasis on agriculture and rural identity, even while addressing an urban electorate like Pimpri Chinchwad.

He added that some decisions must be taken keeping the larger interest of Maharashtra in mind. According to Pawar, political choices should not always be viewed through the lens of personal gain or short-term advantage. Instead, he suggested, unity becomes necessary when it helps protect democratic values and ensures stable governance.

However, the announcement was not without sharp criticism of political opponents.

Without naming any individuals or parties, Pawar alleged that rival forces in Pimpri Chinchwad were indulging in intimidation tactics to weaken the opposition. He claimed that aspirants were being threatened, particularly through warnings that their construction projects would be stalled if they did not align with certain political interests.

“Women are being threatened, and such poaching politics has never been seen before,” Pawar said, expressing concern over what he described as an unhealthy political environment. His remarks pointed to the pressure faced by local leaders and aspiring candidates, many of whom are deeply connected to the city’s real estate and development sector.

According to Pawar, several people had personally informed him about these threats. “People have told me they were warned that their construction works would be stopped,” he said. Such allegations, if true, raise serious questions about the misuse of power and the erosion of fair political competition at the civic level.

Pawar urged residents of Pimpri Chinchwad not to accept such practices quietly. Emphasising the need for collective resistance, he said citizens should not tolerate intimidation and must stand up for what is right. “Residents should not tolerate this, and justice must be ensured,” Pawar asserted, calling for accountability and transparency in the political process.

The timing of the alliance is also politically significant. Civic elections often serve as a testing ground for larger state-level equations. A strong performance in Pimpri Chinchwad could send a message beyond municipal limits, influencing political narratives across Maharashtra. For party workers on the ground, the coming together of the two NCP factions is expected to boost morale and reduce confusion among voters.

At the same time, the alliance places a greater responsibility on the leadership to maintain internal coordination and present a coherent agenda. Voters are likely to look beyond symbols and slogans, focusing instead on governance records and future promises. Issues such as urban planning, affordable housing, transport, and employment will remain central to the campaign.

As the PCMC elections draw closer, the political atmosphere in Pimpri Chinchwad is set to intensify. The NCP alliance hopes that unity, combined with a message of social harmony and resistance to intimidation, will strike a chord with the electorate. Whether this family reunion translates into electoral success will be known only after the votes are counted, but for now, the alliance has undeniably reshaped the political landscape of the city.
