  • Isha Ambani says a failed college assignment exposed India’s internet connectivity gap.
  • A conversation with Akash Ambani helped shape the idea behind Jio.
  • Jio Platforms is preparing for an IPO worth up to ₹30,213 crore.

A failed college assignment helped spark the idea behind Reliance Jio, Isha Ambani revealed at a press conference on October 15, 2026. She recalled being unable to submit an assignment online during a visit to Mumbai because the internet was not working. The experience prompted her and brother Akash Ambani to question India’s connectivity gap compared with the US.

According to Isha, Akash believed a digital technology platform could help address the problem. Reliance Jio subsequently launched commercial services in September 2016, introducing free voice calls and affordable data plans that expanded mobile internet access across India.

The story comes as Jio Platforms prepares for its initial public offering (IPO). The company has filed its Red Herring Prospectus, with a price band of ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share. The issue comprises up to 27 crore fresh equity shares and could raise approximately ₹30,213 crore. The IPO is scheduled to open on October 21 and close on October 23, 2026.

Isha also highlighted Reliance’s focus on long-term planning, scale, and execution as key principles behind its business strategy.
