What looked like a playoff-calibre team a few weeks ago now looks mentally drained. Against Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala, PBKS posted 200 runs, controlled large parts of the match and still lost. Again.

That makes it 5 consecutive defeats.

The scoreboard says Mumbai Indians won by 6 wickets. The bigger story is that Punjab Kings are collapsing at the worst possible stage of the season.

Tilak Varma flipped the match completely againts Punjab Kings.

Mumbai’s chase looked unstable midway through the innings.

Then Tilak Varma took over.

His unbeaten 75 off 33 balls changed the pace of the game within minutes. He attacked Marco Jansen, handled pressure calmly and turned a difficult chase into a final-over finish that suddenly felt inevitable.

Will Jacks added late damage with a brutal cameo, but Tilak controlled the chase emotionally. That mattered more. Mumbai eventually chased down 201 with one ball remaining against Punjab Kings.

PBKS are repeating the same mistakes every game

That’s the worrying part for Punjab. The defeats don’t even look different anymore. They score enough runs. Then the bowling leaks heavily in the death overs. Fielding errors return. Pressure moments fall apart quickly.

Even before this game, the Punjab Kings camp publicly admitted their catching standards had hurt them badly this season. Against MI, the same cracks appeared again.

A team that once looked aggressive and fearless now looks tense every time the game gets close. That shift usually starts mentally before it appears statistically.

Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy quietly worked

Bumrah leading Mumbai Indians felt unusual at first. But the team looked calmer under him than expected. Mumbai’s bowling changes stayed disciplined despite Punjab Kings crossing 200. More importantly, MI never panicked during the chase even when required rates climbed sharply.

That says something about the dressing room atmosphere.

For a side already struggling in the points table, this was one of Mumbai’s most composed performances of the season.

Punjab’s playoff hopes now look dangerously thin

This loss may end up defining PBKS’ season.

Five straight defeats at this stage of the tournament usually destroy momentum completely. The points table pressure now becomes brutal because every remaining match turns into a knockout situation. And the body language after the match told its own story.

Preity Zinta and Ricky Ponting were seen in a long post-match discussion immediately after the defeat. The visuals spread quickly online because the frustration was obvious. Punjab still has the talent.

What they don’t have right now is stability.

Mumbai may have found their future middle-order engine

Tilak Varma’s innings felt bigger than just one match-winning knock.

Mumbai Indians have spent parts of this season searching for batting rhythm outside their established senior names. Tilak is beginning to look like the player who can carry that next phase of the batting unit.

He didn’t just attack. He controlled tempo, absorbed pressure and accelerated exactly when the chase demanded it. That’s the difference between a good T20 innings and a franchise-defining one. Mumbai’s season may still be hanging by a thread.

But if Tilak keeps batting like this, MI probably already knows who their next long-term batting pillar is.
